The structure of convective rain cells at mid-latitudes

چکیده
Rain cells are structures which represent an important component of convective precipitation and a study of their properties represents a necessary step both towards improved stochastic models of small-scale precipitation and for the verification of deterministic high resolution local-area models. The case of intense convective precipitation in the tropics has been analysed in a recent study (von Hardenberg et al., 2003). Here we extend the analysis to mid-latitudes and we present results on the structure of convective rain cells observed by radar measurements in Italy. In particular we consider the average shape of precipitation cells and its dependence on radar resolution and the distributions of ellipticities.

Precipitation classification at mid-latitudes in terms of drop size distribution parameters
The drop size distribution (DSD) is a fundamental property of rainfall because the shape of the distribution reflects the physics of rain formation processes. Given the lack of studies on the DSD at mid-latitudes, the present work focuses on the microphysical characterization of precipitation events occurring in Italy, using two different types of disdrometer. A large number of different rain e...
متن کاملAutomatic recognition of squall line – a way to longer validity of some extrapolation rainfall nowcasting?
Most of meteorological phenomena that have significant impact upon society and infrastructure – such as heavy precipitation, thunderstorms, lightning, hail, hurricanes and tornadoes are related to convection. Therefore their recognition and forecasting play major role in operational aspects of national weather services, especially in the regions where such phenomena constitute one of the major ...
متن کاملRecent Trends of Summer Convective and Stratiform Precipitation in Mid-Eastern China
Many studies have reported on the trends of precipitation in Mid-Eastern China (EC). However, the trends of convective and stratiform precipitation are still unknown. Here, we examine the trends of summer convective and stratiform precipitation in EC from 2002 to 2012 on the basis of the TRMM observations. Results revealed that the rain frequency (RF) for both convective and stratiform precipit...
متن کاملDiscriminating raining from non-raining clouds at mid-latitudes using multispectral satellite data
We propose a new method for the delineation of precipitation using cloud properties derived from optical satellite data. This approach is not only sufficient for the detection of mainly convective precipitation by means of the commonly used connection between infrared cloud top temperature and rainfall probability but enables the detection of stratiform precipitation (e.g., in connection with m...
متن کاملA TRMM-Calibrated infrared technique for rainfall estimation: Application on rain events over eastern Mediterranean
The aim is to evaluate the use of a satellite infrared (IR) technique for estimating rainfall over the eastern Mediterranean. The Convective-Stratiform Technique (CST), calibrated by coincident, physically retrieved rain rates from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Precipitation Radar (PR), is applied over the Eastern Mediterranean for four rain events during the six month period o...
